I never have anything to wear...

Updated: Nov 13, 2023

Finding the perfect outfit for an on-camera interview, isn't as easy as you think.

On-Camera outfits

The clothes we wear send powerful signals to everyone we come in contact with, including your viewing audience. They help project your self image, and ultimately your brand.

You are what you wear

You only have 7 seconds to make a first impression. The clothes you wear say a lot about what you do, where you're from and how you feel about yourself.

What you wear, sends nonverbal cues to other people. That's according to Mary Ellen Roach and Joanne Eicher, dress scholars. According to their research, our clothing shows:

  • How much power you wield

  • How much influence you have

  • How smart you are

  • How much you earn

Dress to Impress

  1. Colors: Finding a complimentary color to your hair, eyes and skin tone is crucial. That bright pink might look amazing on your best friend, but a royal blue may just bring out your strengths more. It's also important to know which color looks best on your, but also which color translates best on camera. The lens can do some funky things, and changing the tone of a color is one.

  2. Patterns: They can be fun, flirty, but ultimately distracting, depending on the pattern. You want to make sure your dress or shirt isn't causing the camera to go wonky. Some patterns can appear to be moving on-camera, and that distracts from you, and what you're saying.

  3. Accessories: Having a great pair of earrings, or that perfectly matched necklace is clutch, but you have to make sure they're not oversized, too sparkly or just simply too distracting. You want to accessories to compliment your outfit, not distract from what you're saying.
