Have you ever watched someone on TV being interviewed, or judged a pageant with virtual interviews and the person is looking off to the side of the camera, or standing outside and all you hear is the garbage truck in the background?
How distracting is it to watch someone refuse to make eye contact with the camera?
How distracting is it to hear the garbage truck in the background?
You're so busy thinking about what are they looking at? Or what is the garbage truck picking up? Or when will it leave so I can hear them? That you don't even LISTEN to what they're saying. That's a problem. And that's where I come in.
3 Simple Tips for a flawless virtual interview:
1) No Distractions: Do not, I repeat, do NOT shoot your virtual interview outside, for any reason. Find a quiet place inside your home, be it your bedroom (preferably without your bed in the background) living room, dining room etc. Somewhere quiet where you are the focus.
2) Look at the camera: Yes, this can feel awkward. But it is so necessary. Think of the camera as your best friend, and you're telling them your story. You wouldn't look around them, above them etc. You look AT them. The camera is your friend.
3) Use a mic: You want to make sure your audio is CLEAN. Why? YOU are the focus. Do not let anything else steal your spotlight.
I personally use a wired mic for my cellphone, which is an iPhone for all of my video content. It creates audio with less background noise, therefore less distractions.
If you would like to buy one from Amazon, I recommend the PoP Voice Professional Lavalier Microphone Omnidirectional Condenser Mic for iPhone/Android Smartphone. This is an affordable way to have clean audio during a virtual interview or even social media content.
If you're looking for something a little more convenient but will cost you more, try the Movo Wireless Mini DI Microphone iPhone for Video Recording.
