Being in front of the camera for the last 15 years, I've made my share of mistakes. I distinctly remember my first live appearance. I thought I was going to pass out, throw up, pee myself and I had hives all over my chest.
I had practiced so many time in front of a camera, my mirror, managers etc., but nothing truly prepared me for the real thing.
It wasn't until I started to make my own mistakes during on-camera appearances, that I started to learn from them. But I want you to learn from my mistakes, and better prepare you for what may seem like small issues, that can really turn bad fast.
Mistakes I've made, and I'm hoping yo can avoid:
Here are some common mistakes that can undermine your on-camera confidence:
Not being prepared: Not being fully prepared for your on-camera appearance can lead to nervousness and a lack of confidence. Be sure to do your research, practice your talking points, and know your material inside and out.
Lack of eye contact: Avoiding eye contact with the camera can make you appear disinterested or untrustworthy. Make eye contact with the camera to connect with your audience and build trust.
Fidgeting or poor body language: Fidgeting or poor body language can make you appear nervous or unconfident. Avoid excessive movement, slouching, or other behaviors that can be distracting.
Talking too fast or too slow: Speaking too quickly can make it difficult for your audience to follow along, while speaking too slowly can make you appear unenthusiastic or unprepared. Practice your pacing and delivery to ensure that you speak at a clear and consistent pace.
Lack of energy: A lack of energy or enthusiasm can make your on-camera appearance feel flat and unengaging. Be sure to bring your energy and personality to your performance to keep your audience engaged.
Trying to be someone you're not: Pretending to be someone you're not can make you appear insincere or inauthentic. Be yourself and let your personality shine through on camera.
Overthinking: Overthinking or getting caught up in perfectionism can lead to self-doubt and anxiety. Focus on your message and avoid getting too caught up in details that may not matter as much to your audience.
Not being present: Not being fully present in the moment can make it difficult to connect with your audience or stay focused on your message. Stay focused on the task at hand and avoid getting distracted by thoughts or worries.
This may seem like a lot to think about, and it is. But, taking the time to practice and at least having these common mistakes in the back of your mind, can help.
